Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke - Princess Mononoke Theme Music Chest

Princess Mononoke follows the journey of the last Emishi prince, Ashitaka, and his attempts to make peace between the human settlement, Irontown, and the creatures living in the forest that surrounds it.

The story takes place in Japan during the Muromachi Period, which is considered to be the transition period between the medieval period and the early modern period. It is notable that the power of the shoguns greatly declined in this period. The landscapes which appear in Princess Mononoke are said to have been inspired by the ancient forests of Yakushima, off Kyūshū, and the mountains of Shirakami-Sanchi in northern Honshū.

The most poignant line of the film was delivered by Moro, the Wolf God. He states;

“The trees cry out as they die, but you cannot hear them.”

This scene culminates this idea of human ignorance, which is laid bare throughout the film. Miyazaki uses the moral ambiguity of humans to reveal the complications of living on this planet.

The film score of Princess Mononoke was composed and performed by Joe Hisaishi, the soundtrack composer for nearly all of Miyazaki's productions. The soundtrack was released in Japan on July 2, 1997, and the North American version was released by on October 12, 1999.
